Sally Vivian’s work has developed as a hybrid practice, working across disciplines, using mixed media in installations often incorporating video, water and ice. Phenomena such as light, reflection and duration are used to question perceived reality and the relationship of the image with it. Interests touch on aspects such as transience, transformation of states, re-presentation and materiality. Vivian works with ephemerality; the body in space; and perception.
Earlier installations, such as Flux, have offered encounters that disrupt perceptual assumptions and engage the viewer in considering time, reality and the image and the slippage between them. The intersection of perception, time, and the nature of reality are important concerns.
Reflect, an installation presented as part of VCA Graduate Exhibition, 2023, reflects my interest in time, materiality, metaphysics and transformation and explores the interaction of light, surfaces, reflection and projection. The installation offers the opportunity to consider the passing of time, transformation and our vital interconnection with water – the essence of life - and references climate change.
